The Drowned Earth novellas began as a vague idea of a ‘shared world’ project back in 2018. After publishing our first anthology of Australian speculative fiction, Beginnings, we thought it would be fun to try something a little different…
First we had some heated discussion about the type of world we wanted to create. Science Fiction? Fantasy? Set after a deadly virus had been released? Exploring other planets?
Possibly inspired by recent environmental crises, we eventually settled on a cli-fi approach to this project.
Once the setting was decided, we then began organising the project in earnest. This involved:
- Inviting authors to send in pitches for novellas set in Australia after the sea levels had risen
- Shortlisting these pitches and inviting shortlisted authors to write and submit their opening pages
- Deciding on the eight best pieces of writing which would allow a range of locations and dates post-rise
The eight selected authors then spent the next few months writing, rewriting and editing their novellas. This was no ordinary project, however, because the novellas were set in a shared world – so the authors also had to communicate with each other to make sure that their details matched up. This was not always an easy feat!
Check out our kickstarter for more details about the novellas. They are all standalone stories that can be read in any order.
The novellas are set to be released in both ebook and paperback formats.
We also have a prequal short story, Shards of Silver, that can be read for free to dip your toe into the Drowned Earth waters. You can check it out here.
